Anzio

This week I learned how difficult it is to try to plan large group movements, especially last-minute. We were trying to find a place for a weekend getaway, given the high temperatures in Rome, but with 10 people (two of them little girls) and a strong desire for air conditioning, non-shady, non-ludicrously expensive options were slim. After a lengthy struggle (which included considering renting a big air-conditioned apartment in Rome, we decided to chuck the getaway plan and instead hit the beach for the day. In the end, thanks to a recommendation Jinn scouted online, we wound up at Marechiaro, near Anzio, the site of the Allied landings in WWII. A pair of loungers under an umbrella cost 15 euro, the beach was uncrowded, and the sea was beautiful. The few times in my life I've gone to the beach have been either Long Island Sound or once on the Lido in Venice, neither of which have particularly strong currents, so the big waves coming in at Anzio were so much fun! Best of all, it was twenty degrees cooler than Rome, given the strong wind.  Twenty degrees.  Hopefully we can go once more before we leave...
