Arrivederci, Roma

So it's almost here, after two years. Our flight leaves at 9:40am tomorrow.

I'll miss Rome: not just the coffee, the wine, and the food, but its grandeur, its beauty, and even (a little) its chaos. Where else in the West do you encounter history so casually, and frequently? Walking to dinner the other night with Carla, for example, I looked up at a Renaissance building I hadn't noticed before, on which its frieze proudly announced, in Latin, its owner's name (Turci), his title as an apostolic notary, and the date, 1500. Just for a second, as I read the inscription and admired the building, I felt like I was participating in a conversation across time. I'll miss those moments. Hopefully I won't forget them either...one reason I still keep this blog.
