My purple mystery plant from Rome is a bougainvillea! There's a web page here with pictures of various growths of it around the city.
I found out its name by accident; Rae lent me Garrison Keillor's latest book, Pilgrims, in which a bunch of Lake Woebegonians visit Rome. He described a bougainvillea cascading down a several-story building. How many flowering plants grow that big? So I googled it, and voila. Bougainvillea!
